Turning dreams into reality

STATE Magazine makes its way into your home three times every year. This issue includes two of the most incredible events in our history, and they happened within 45 days of each other. A woman poses in front of a book shelf

On Nov. 24, millions of people watched as The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, led by Kevin Kessler ’98, wowed with its energy, precision and sound at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. While the name Pride was bestowed on the band members years ago, and rightfully so, it is hard to come up with a word other than proud for how they all made us feel that day when they took to the streets of New York City!

Then on Jan. 8, the Jackrabbits football team hoisted the trophy as national champions! The team went undefeated in Football Championship Subdivision play and routed rival NDSU to claim the title! Weeks prior to that, head football coach John Stiegelmeier ’79 was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Every issue of this magazine has an element of the dreams realized because of South Dakota State University. Whether it is the story of a student achieving something monumental, an alum changing the lives of others, or the celebration of significant events in the lives of those working in and around SDSU, these pages are the holders of that history. The opportunity to capture two events that involve the tremendous success of 500 students, and the staff, faculty, administration and fans who support them, in one issue still seems unbelievable.

And to have these two programs led by alumni of this institution, that’s premier.

With loyal heart so true,
