Shared stories create a bond

The Alumni Association offices in the new Alumni Center look out over the historic College Green. The view of the Coughlin Campanile and Coolidge Sylvan Theatre is spectacular. Thanks to Mother Nature, with an assist from SDSU Facilities and Services, the view over the past summer has been almost electric. It is an inspiring view, but campus is a quieter place in the summer. There are many times when you can look out and for an extended period of time it almost seems like a picture, frozen in time, completely still.Andi Fouberg, president and CEO of Alumni Association

Then, one day in August, as though a switch has been flipped, it comes to life. Once again, the campus is full of eager and energetic students on the path to pursuing their dreams. Some are here for the first time and others have come back to continue what they have already started. They will forever be connected to this place, by this shared experience that will change them in so many ways.

We arrive typically with a mix of excitement and nervousness and leave in a similar manner, yet we grew so much during the years we spent at State. Now I get to hear the stories of professors who changed lives, the meeting of a spouse or the one that got away, and the near death experiences that have likely become more legendary over the years from the original mishap. These shared stories create a bond between the alumni of SDSU, we are proud of our affiliation with State and want to share that with others.

Sharing how special this place is to you matters. It matters to the young people in your universe who may be searching for a college of their own. It matters to the young alum who just moved to your neighborhood and may not know anyone yet. It matters to the coworker who may be looking for someone to catch a ride with back to Brookings for their first Hobo Day in too long.

Just like the College Green comes alive each fall, I hope you will reconnect to “The College on the Hill” once more. The motto of the Alumni Association is “Where Loyalty Lives,” but we also know that it lives in each of us.
