The Milk Maid

With a column titled, “The Milk Maid,” you would expect that Brittany Moorse ’12 graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in agricultural communications. However, that’s not the case.Brittany Moorse feeds a calf in a calf hutch.

Moorse, who lives in Minneota, Minnesota, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in dairy production and a minor in agricultural business. She returned to the family farm, which has a 90-cow dairy, milking registered Holsteins, Jerseys, Brown Swiss and a few crossbred.

“I am the calf grower, which is my favorite job that I do. I also am a relief milker and am responsible for maintaining our herd records,” she said while preparing the morning meals for more than two dozen calves in September, including one that was born at 5 a.m. that day.

Her column started in 2015. While she tries to keep it centered on agriculture, she does cover other topics.

She has not written about her favorite Hobo Day activities but admits that event created many of her favorite memories of her time at State.

“There are so many. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at State,” she said. “I always got a kick out of Miss Homelycoming. The relationships that I built in and outside of the classroom I will always treasure.

“Anytime I’m in Brookings I like to just drive around campus to see how its changed. And it has.”
