SDSU Twins Night

If you have watched a Minnesota Twins game on Fox Sports North, you are used to Hall of Fame pitcher turned color commentator Bert Blyleven circling fans with the telestrator on screen. While I was watching one of these games last season, I saw an advertisement for an upcoming college night with a cobranded cap in the university’s colors. So we reached out to the Twins and circled a date on the calendar—July 12, 2018, would be the inaugural SDSU Night at the Twins.

We kicked off promotion of the game at the Summit League tournament, before tickets were even on sale. Social media posts about the event were shared at a much higher rate than our other posts. People who live outside of the region were asking how to buy a cap. Reports of families planning a weekend in Minnesota started rolling in to our office. Soon our fears of not hitting the 1,000-cap minimum started to subside, until the Twins told us that early sales rates pushed that number to 2,000 and eventually 2,500.

When the day finally rolled around, we descended on Minneapolis, a sea of Jackrabbits everywhere you looked. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm also made its way to the Twin Cities. However, Jackrabbits would not be deterred, and they weathered the storm together filling up the covered areas of Target Field waiting out the rain delay running into old friends and making new ones.

After a false start, the second time taking up the tarp was a success and new SDSU alum, Jake Wieneke threw out the ceremonial first pitch to a warm welcome from the Jackrabbit faithful in attendance. Jack lifted the Twins Territory and SDSU Alumni Association flags to signal it was game time.

In the end, the Twins recorded a “W” and Jackrabbits fans enjoyed a new experience. We will announce the date for the second annual SDSU Night at the Twins in the winter issue so you can circle your calendars to join us.
