South Dakota State women’s basketball student-athlete Macy Miller and men’s basketball student-athlete Mike Daum were named candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award.
The candidates will be narrowed to a field of 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the four categories.
Miller, who became the Jackrabbits’ all-time leading scorer in December, was named one of 35 candidates for the 2019 Wade Trophy.
Daum, who is also SDSU’s all-time leading scorer, recently surpassed the 2,500-point mark.
In addition, quarterback Taryn Christion was named one of 13 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, which is awarded annually to college football’s top scholar-athlete.
The award is presented by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame in partnership with Fidelity Investments. Christion is the fourth Jackrabbit to be named a Campbell Trophy® finalist and recipient of an NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, joining Ryan Berry (2008), Zach Zenner (2014) and Jake Wieneke (2017).
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the Campbell Trophy® and NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
