Jackrabbits women’s basketball alum Myah Selland ’22 and ’23 and current forward Tori Nelson brought $25,000 back to Brookings following a July trip to Los Angeles for the Gatorade Player of the Year Awards.
That’s where the pair’s nonprofit organization, Her Turn, was named the recipient of the annual Gatorade Community Grant Award.
Her Turn is a scholarship program designed to provide sports opportunities to young girls within the Brookings community who may not otherwise have the chance. Her Turn scholarship recipients can attend a South Dakota State University athletic camp of their choice at no cost to their family. To further reduce barriers, the program will work with families to provide transportation to and from the camp, as well as provide necessary equipment.
Selland, the 2016-17 Gatorade South Dakota Girls Basketball Player of the Year, was eligible to apply for the grant on behalf of an organization of her choice. Her Turn will use the funds to further its scholarship program, supporting the longevity of Her Turn and becoming a more sustainable resource for the Brookings community.
“We are so incredibly honored to be recognized by Gatorade for our efforts in advancing equity in youth sports,” Selland said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to share more about Her Turn and our mission to a national audience.”
Selland and Nelson traveled to Los Angeles to officially receive the grant July 11. The duo was also invited to attend the ESPY Awards July 12.
