Karla Trautman has been appointed interim director of SDSU Extension. The appointment became effective May 23, when former director and dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences Barry H. Dunn assumed the presidency of South Dakota State University.
“Karla’s long history with SDSU Extension makes her uniquely qualified to serve in this role,†said Dunn. “Having worked alongside her for the past five years, I know her ability to provide strategic leadership and foster essential relationships with stakeholders will assure that SDSU Extension continues to be the strong outreach arm of South Dakota State University.â€
Daniel Scholl, the interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, said Trautman is a trusted colleague and friend, and will do well.
“Karla is an experienced administrator with a deep understanding of SDSU Extension and the needs of the many constituencies who rely upon it. She’s an excellent choice to serve in this role.â€
Trautman will serve in the role until a permanent director can be named.
Trautman originally joined SDSU Extension in 1988 as a county extension educator in Clear Lake. Subsequently, she became the program director for family consumer science and 4-H youth development in 2000, then served as community development program leader and leadership development specialist from 2007 to 2011, when she became associate director.
She earned a master’s in educational administration from SDSU in 2003, and previously received a bachelor’s degree in home economics extension from SDSU in 1987.
