South Dakota State University student Vivian Osei Poku recently was selected to serve on The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi’s 2020-2022 Council of Students. The council, comprised of seven student vice presidents from chapters across the nation, serves as the society’s student engagement committee.
Osei Poku, initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2018, is currently pursuing a doctorate in biochemistry at SDSU. A native of Kumasi, Ghana, she will serve a two-year term on the council during the 2020-2022 biennium.
“I am elated to serve as a member of the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi national council of students and very grateful to the executive board of the SDSU chapter for its mentorship and encouragement,†Osei Poku said. “As a student of SDSU and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, I believe this achievement will enable me to represent and increase the visibility of SDSU and the SDSU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi on the national level.â€
Osei Poku received the John E. Miller Scholarship following the 39th annual Victor K. Webster Lecture in February 2020 at the South Dakota Art Museum’s auditorium. She also received the chapter’s Carol Peterson Leadership Scholarship in April 2019.
“We are thrilled for Vivian to have been selected to be one of the seven student members of the Council of Students for Phi Kappa Phi. She has been an outstanding member of our campus chapter, having already garnered a Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant for her work on health literacy within the Brookings community, and her selection to this group further illustrates her embodiment of the Phi Kappa Phi mission of a commitment to service within our community of scholars,†said SDSU Professor Aaron Ragsdale, who is the chapter’s president.
The Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant has Osei Poku working with another student vice president of the SDSU chapter to improve health literacy and safety through infographic fact cards in underserved populations.
