An instrumental part of the SDSU campus community for more than 30 years, Mike Reger, Ph.D., died in January. Reger influenced the lives of many who had the privilege of working with him during his time on campus. A ceremony celebrating his life and his impact was held April 7 at the Performing Arts Center on campus.
Reger retired from SDSU in March 2010, as the executive vice president for administration, an area he served from 1993 until his retirement. He supervised financial operations, student affairs, human resources, communications and physical facilities that included more than 70 construction and renovation projects.
Reger arrived in Brookings in 1979 from the University of Vermont. He was initially the associate director of housing before becoming the dean of Student Affairs in 1985. In 1993, Reger was named vice president for administration before being promoted to executive vice president in 2000.
Active in the Brookings community, Reger was a member of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce, the Brookings Optimist Club and was chairman of the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter Board. He also was a referee for the USA Hockey Officiating Program, an instructor for hockey officials and served as the South Dakota referee-in-chief.
