John C. “Jack†Marshman, longtime head of Sioux Falls Construction, died July 26, 2018, at Avera Dougherty Hospice, Sioux Falls, surrounded by family.
Marshman, 84, was a 1955 civil engineering graduate who was tabbed as a Distinguished Engineer by the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering in 2001 and a Distinguished Alumnus in 2003.
Marshman was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Sioux Falls, graduated from Sioux Falls Washington in 1951 and followed up his bachelor’s degree with a master’s from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1956, when he returned to South Dakota and began work at Sioux Falls Construction.
After serving as construction superintendent and project manager, Marshman was named general manager in 1970 and then president in 1985. He became chairman of the board in 1999.
Among his efforts on behalf of the industry, he served as president of the Associated General Contractors of South Dakota and helped establish and support the construction management bachelor’s degree at SDSU.
On Oct. 12, 2018, the Lohr Award for Volunteer Leadership was presented to his family in honor of his contributions to South Dakota State. He served as a SDSU Foundation trustee from 2010 until his passing and was one of the lead donors for the renovation of Solberg Hall, which was completed by his firm.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Elnear “Ellie†Marshman, of Sioux Falls; three daughters and 10 grandchildren.
