NE Hansen (in back seat) was SDSU’s first head of the Department of Horticulture, serving from 1895 to 1937. He made eight trips overseas to study agriculture and collect samples. Hansen’s caravan followed the hardy alfalfa trail for thousands of miles into northern Siberia. Here he is among Kirghiz Tartars in Simipalatinsk, Siberia, in 1913.
