Morrill Act turns 150

In this issue of STATE Magazine we recognize the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act, landmark legislation signed July 2, 1862, that transformed higher education in the United States and the world. South Dakota State University was founded in 1881 as the state’s first land-grant institution, rooted in the land-grant ideals of teaching, research and outreach, offering broad access to opportunity and discovery. The stories in this issue focus on some of SDSU’s success stories, past and present, which illustrate our continuing land-grant mission.
